To celebrate the New Year in Japan, we flew these beautiful (and fragrant!!!) Shimekazari!

Usually hung on the porch or the entrance door, the Shimekazari is a braided rice straw rope, which is also hung on Shinto shrine gates to stop bad spirits, and other auspicious objects that have significant meanings to ring in the new year! Bonus: The natural rice straw braids smell wonderful too.

The pine twigs are symbols of power and longevity, because they are green all the time and the fern leaves are symbols of hope and desire to have a happy family, growing from generations to generation.

Plum branches symbolizes steadfastness, the Turtle (Kappa) symbolizes longevity, good luck, and support. Crane made of Mizuhiki cord symbolizes longevity.

  • Choose from 4 designs!
  • Suitable for New Year AND Lunar New Year! Some families hang these all year round...
  • Leaves are all real and not synthetic (so they smell wonderful~) please be gentle with them.
